The author proves regularity estimates for solutions of the linear heat equation in a bounded domain in \(\mathbb {R}^2\) with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. The right hand side belongs to the non-reflexive space \(L^q((0,T);L(\log L)^p(\Omega ))\), where \(L(\log L)^p(\Omega )\) denotes the Lorentz-Zygmund space \(L^{1,1}(\log L)^p(\Omega )\), \(1<q\leq \infty \), \(0\leq p\leq 1\). The initial values are assumed to be in \(L^{q,q}(\log L)^{p-1}\), or \(L(\log L)^p\) in the case \(q=1\), \(0<p\leq 1\). As a corollary, it is shown that there exists a unique weak solution in the class \(L^2((0,T);H^1_0(\Omega ))\cap L^{\infty }((0,T);L^2(\Omega ))\) for the external force in \(L^2((0,T);L(\log L)^p)(\Omega ))\), \(p\geq 1/2\).
