Let \(G\) be a group which is not finitely generated. Then the cofinality of \(G\) is the least cardinal \(\lambda\) such that \(G\) can be expressed as the union of a chain of \(\lambda\) proper subgroups. The author surveys work on the cofinalities of infinite permutation groups. In particular, he discusses the infinite symmetric groups, automorphism groups of various relational structures, infinite products of finite simple groups, and the relationship with cardinal invariants of the continuum.
