The paper gives an overview on extremum seeking methods, where either the objective function with unknown parameters has to be optimized or the desired stated have to be selected to optimize a performance function. These methods are used frequently in on-line optimization and real-time optimization. Two different class of extremum seeking methods are discussed in detail; the perturbation based methods and the model-based methods.
