A first instance of circular summation of theta series was recorded by S. Ramanujan in his Lost Notebook. His formula was first proved by \textit{S. S. Rangachari} [J. Number Theory 48, No. 3, 364--372 (1994; Zbl 0813.11030)]. \textit{S. H. Chan} and \textit{Z.-G. Liu} [J. Number Theory 130, No. 5, 1190--1196 (2010; Zbl 1196.33016)] proved formulas which comprise as special cases most of the previously known formulas on circular summation. In the paper under review the author presents proofs of these formulas which are completely elementary in the sense that only clever manipulations of multiple infinite series are needed.
