Let \(\mathcal A_g\) denote the reduction mod \(p\) of the moduli space of \(g\)-dimensional principally polarized abelian varieties, and for each non-empty subset \(J\subset I:=\{0,\dots, g\}\), let \(\mathcal A_J\) be the Siegel moduli space with a parahoric level structure at \(p\) of type \(J\) (parametrizing \(J\)-chains of polarized abelian varieties). In the present paper the authors study the relationship between the Ekedahl-Oort (EO) strata in \(\mathcal A_g\) and the Kottwitz-Rapoport (KR) strata in \(\mathcal A_J\). KR strata were studied by \textit{B. C. Ngô} and \textit{A. Genestier} [Ann. Inst. Fourier 52, No. 6, 1665--1680 (2002; Zbl 1046.14023)], the first named author and the reviewer [Taiwanese J. Math. 14, No. 6, 2343--2364 (2010; Zbl 1229.14021); J. Inst. Math. Jussieu 9, No. 2, 357--390 (2010; Zbl 1191.14028); Math. Ann. 353, No. 2, 465--498 (2012; Zbl 1257.14019)]. EO strata were introduced by Ekedahl and \textit{F. Oort} [Prog. Math. 195, 345--416 (2001; Zbl 1052.14047)] and were also studied by Moonen and Wedhorn. The directly related works are due to \textit{S. Harashita} [J. Algebr. Geom. 19, No. 3, 419--438 (2010; Zbl 1195.14032)] and the second named author [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 81, No. 1, 129--141 (2010; Zbl 1193.14056)] on supersingular EO strata. Main results of this paper are as follows: (1) (Theorem 2.8) Let \(w\in W_{g,\text{final}}\) be a final element and let \(J\subset I\) be the type of the corresponding canonical filtration. The natural morphism \(\mathcal A_J\to \mathcal A_g\) restricts to an isomorphism \(\mathcal A_{J, \overline{w\tau}}\to EO_w\). (2) (Theorem 3.10) The description of supersingular KR strata in \(\mathcal A_I\) in term of Deligne-Lusztig varieties and that for supersingular EO strata are compatible with the natural morphism \(\mathcal A_{I, w\tau}\to EO_w\). (3) (Theorems 4.3 and 4.5) An explicit description of supersingular KR strata in \(\mathcal A_J\) is obtained. This is modeled on and generalizes the results of the first named author and the reviewer in the Iwahori case. The paper is well-organized and densely written.
