The notion of locally quasi-convex group was introduced by \textit{N. Ya. Vilenkin} in [Izv. Akad. Nauk SSSR, Ser. Mat. 15, 439--462 (1951; Zbl 0044.25902)], and relates topological properties of an abelian group to its representation theory. The central point of the paper under review is a generalisation of this notion to a certain class of possibly non-abelian groups, with applications to duality problems. In order to study group topologies that can be defined using finite dimensional representations and are Hausdorff, the authors focus on groups for which such representations separate points, that is maximally almost periodic (MAP) groups. Let \(G\) be an MAP group. From the data of a representation space with a bornology satisfying some compatibility conditions, a Hausdorff group topology is constructed on \(G\), called dually induced topology. It is proved that this construction induces a bijection between the poset of representation spaces of \(G\) and the poset of Hausdorff totally bounded group topologies on \(G\), thus generalising results of [\textit{W. W. Comfort} and \textit{K. A. Ross}, Fundam. Math. 55, 284--291 (1964; Zbl 0138.02905)] on totally bounded abelian groups. Existence results for dually induced topologies are obtained, using techniques that expand ideas of \textit{I. Namioka} [Mathematika 34, No. 2, 258--281 (1987; Zbl 0654.46017)]. Moreover, families of dually induced topologies are proved to be compatible with the pair \(\langle G,\widehat{G}\rangle\) when \(G\) is Čech-complete and abelian. Dually, a procedure is described, that associates a uniformity on the dual object \(\widehat{G}\) of a topological group, starting from a group bornology on \(G\). An abelian group \(G\) is said to be determined if for every dense subgroup \(D\) of \(G\), the restriction homomorphism \(R\left|_D\right.:\widehat{G}\longrightarrow\widehat{D}\) is a topological isomorphism. It was proved independently in [\textit{M. J. Chasco}, Arch. Math. 70, No. 1, 22--28 (1998; Zbl 0899.22001)] and [\textit{L. Aussenhofer}, Contributions to the duality theory of abelian topological groups and to the theory of nuclear groups. Diss. Math. 384, 113 p. (1999; Zbl 0953.22001)] that metrizable abelian groups are determined. The authors define and study a notion of non-necessarily abelian (uniformly) determined groups, relying on the aforementioned uniformity construction, then establish that compact groups which are determined in this sense are metrizable.
