The paper is devoted to the study of polynomial sequences generated by integral composite powers of a first order differential operator, whose canonical form can be fully characterized. These canonical forms are regular forms \(u_0\), fulfilling \((\phi u_0)'+ \psi u_0=0\), with \(\deg \phi \leq 2,\; \deg \psi=1\) and \(\frac{n}{2}\phi''(0)- \psi'(0) \neq 0\) for \( n \in \mathbb{N}\cup \{0\}\) and they are in deep connection to the four classical orthogonal sequences. First the authors study the properties of these polynomial sequences and when the orthogonality is also assumed, then it is pointed out that the solution is reduced to the Hermite polynomials. Moreover, they use the characterization properties in order to analyze the four possible situations. Finally, they obtain new Rodrigues-type formulas for the classical polynomials of Hermite and Bessel.
