The authors study the sixth-order Boussinesq equation, whose solitary waves are identical to those of the fifth-order Korteweg-De Vries equation. The authors implement the variational proof of existence of solitary waves and the standard proof of orbital stability and instability of solitary waves from an early work of \textit{S. P. Levandosky} [Physica D 125, No. 3--4, 222--240 (1999; Zbl 0934.35159)], where the fifth-order Korteweg-De Vries equation was considered. At the end of the article, the authors analyze the boundaries between the stability and instability domains for parameters of the speed of the solitary wave and the dispersion coefficient of the sixth-order operator. They implement numerical methods (based on spectral renormalization in Fourier space) to approximate the boundaries numerically. The manuscript gives a complete picture of stability of so-called fundamental solitary waves, which are minimizers of the constrained energy. At the same time, the fifth-order Korteweg-De Vries equation (and hence, the sixth-order Boussinesq equations) admits multi-pulse solitary waves, which are composed of several fundamental solitary waves at some distances from each others. Existence and stability of such solitary waves was studied comprehensively in [\textit{M. Chugunova} and \textit{D. Pelinovsky}, Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst., Ser. B 8, No. 4, 773--800 (2007; Zbl 1132.35452)]. Such multi-pulse solitary waves can be included into consideration of the sixth-order Boussinesq equation in future works.
