The authors apply the nowadays well-known vector measure integration of scalar functions for giving a representation theorem for a general class of Banach lattices. In line with the classical representation theorems for some classes of Banach lattices as spaces of integrable functions, they use an extension of these techniques obtained by introducing vector measure integration and they succeed in proving the following relevant result. (Theorem 10). If a Banach lattice \(E\) has the Fatou property and its \(\sigma\)-order continuous part \(E_a\) is order dense in \(E\), then \(E\) is order isometric to \(L^1_w(\nu)\). In the theorem above, \(\nu\) is a specific vector measure that is constructed by following a procedure that concerns all the aspects of the measure, starting from the \(\delta\)-ring where it is defined and finishing with the definition of \(\nu\) in each of its subsets by means of an isomorphism linking the order continuous part \(E_{an}\) of \(E\) with \(L^1(\nu)\), the space of integrable functions with respect to \(\nu\). In order to do that, the authors prove in a first step that, if \(E\) is order continuous, then the space \(L^1(\nu)\) is order isometric to \(E\), the isometry being given by the integration operator (Theorem 5). The arguments in the paper are presented as follows. Let \(\nu:\mathcal R \to E\) be a Banach space valued countably additive vector measure on a \(\delta\)-ring \(\mathcal R\) and consider the space \(L_w^1(\nu)\) of all weakly integrable functions with respect to \(\nu\). The first result of the paper establishes that some requirement on the countability of a suitable decomposition of the measure space is needed for assuring that the space has the Fatou property (Proposition 1). Later on, the authors prove that the vector measure \(\nu\) constructed for obtaining the representation satisfies this requirement. Consequently, they obtain that the corresponding space \(L^1_w(\nu)\) has the Fatou property (Proposition 8) which, together with Theorem 5, allows to prove Theorem 10. Summarizing, this paper shows precisely the limits of the representation theorems for abstract Banach lattices as spaces of integrable functions, proving what in fact is the more general representation theorem for this class of spaces.
