The paper under review deals with the evolution of a uniformly convex hypersurface \(M^m\) in \(\mathbb R^{m+1}\) governed by the equation \[ \frac{\partial^2 X}{\partial^2 t} = F n - b^{ij} \frac{\partial X}{\partial u^i}\frac{\partial X}{\partial u^j}, \] where \(X(u^1,\dots,u^n;t)\) is the position vector of the evolving hypersurface, \(n\) is its unit normal, \(b^{ij}\) stands for the inverse of the second fundamental form, \(F\) denotes a driving force (cf. \textit{Ph. G. LeFloch} and \textit{K. Smoczyk} [``The hyperbolic mean curvature flow'', J. Math. Pures Appl. (9) 90, No. 6, 591--614 (2008; Zbl 1159.53025)], \textit{S.-T. Yau} [``Review of geometry and analysis'', Asian J. Math., 4, No. 1, 235--278 (2000; Zbl 1031.53004)], \textit{D.-X. Kong} and \textit{Z.-G. Wang} [``Formation of singularities in the motion of plane curves under hyperbolic mean curvature flow'', J. Differ. Equations 247, No. 6, 1694--1719 (2009; Zbl 1195.53093)]). The introduced flow turns out to have some nice properties. It is normal preserving, \(\langle \frac{\partial^2 X}{\partial u^j \partial t}, n\rangle\equiv 0\), \(1\leq k\leq n\), if this condition holds at \(t=0\). Expressed in terms of the support function \(H\) for \(M^m\), the flow has the form \(\frac{\partial^2 H}{\partial^2t} = -F\). Besides, for explicitly given graphs it reduces to a fully nonlinear Euclidean invariant hyperbolic equation, whose form depends on the choice of \(F\); for instance, if \(F\) is the negative reciprocal of the Gauss curvature, then one obtains the hyperbolic Monge-Ampère equation etc. The authors establish the local solvability of the equation in question, the proof is based on a paper of \textit{L. Cafarelli; L. Nirenberg} and \textit{J. Spruck} [Acta Math. 155, 261--301 (1985; Zbl 0654.35031)]. Moreover, the finite time blow-up and the asymptotic behavior of the solution are discussed.
