Let \(G\) be a nonabelian \(p\)-group of order \(p^3\). Such a \(G\) is an example of an extraspecial \(p\)-group. For \(p\) odd, such \(G\) are classified as one of two types: \(p_{-}^{1 + 2}\) or \(p_{+}^{1 + 2}\) (depending upon properties of the generators). For \(p = 2\), there are two such groups: the quaternions \(Q_8\) and the dihedral group \(D_8\). Associated to \(G\) is its classifying space \(BG\). Of interest here are the Chow rings, motivic cohomology, and motivic cobordism of \(BG\). The first main result is an identification of the \(p\)-localized Chow ring of \(BG\) with its \(p\)-local cohomology via an intermediary identification involving the Brown-Peterson spectrum: \[ CH^*(BG)_{(p)} \cong BP^{2*}(BG)\otimes_{BP^*}\mathbb{Z}_{(p)} \cong H^{2*}(BG)_{(p)}. \] The new part of this identification is the lefthand isomorphism. The isomorphism is given by Totaro's modified cycle map, which was conjectured (in a more general algebraic group setting) by Totaro to be an isomorphism. The proof makes use of the ordinary cycle map \(CH^*(BG) \to H^{2*}(BG)\), known computations of ordinary and Brown-Peterson cohomology of \(BG\), and an investigation of generators of the Chow ring. Somewhat different arguments are used for the \(p_{+}^{1 + 2}\) case versus the \(p_{-}^{1 + 2}\) and \(p = 2\) cases. The author then turns to the study of motivic cohomology and cobordism, particularly in the \(p = 2\) case. For both \(G = Q_8\) and \(G = D_8\), the mod 2 motivic cohomology of \(BG\) is identified in terms of the ordinary mod 2 cohomology of \(BG\) (which is known). Further, the author gives isomorphisms relating the mod 2 motivic cobordism of \(BG\) to the usual mod 2 cobordism of \(BG\) (and further to the ordinary cobordism of \(BG\)).
