The authors consider a pair of identical oscillators with delayed coupling. By assuming that the coupling is weak they derive equations for a pair of coupled phase oscillators, where the delay appears as a phase shift. They analyse the effects of varying the delay on the existence and stability of phase-locked solutions. The predictions from this reduced model are then compared with the dynamics of a pair of Morris-Lecar oscillators with delayed coupling of either synaptic or diffusive type, and for two different parameter sets. As expected, the reduced model correctly predicts the behaviour for weak coupling. The authors also demonstrate the degeneracy of phase oscillators coupled using only the first mode in the Fourier series of the interaction function.
