Adorned with facsimiles of the relevant pages of manuscripts and articles of the 19th century pioneers, this paper is the definitive study of the originators of examples of non-Desarguesian planes, their precursors, and the significance of these examples in current research around the Salzmann school, such as in the hierarchy of topological projective planes based on the size of the group of automorphisms. Mentioned are not only the names of the geometers involved, such as Beltrami (1865), Klein (1873), Wiener (1892), Peano (1894), Hilbert (1898--1899), Moulton (1902), Vahlen (1905), Veblen and Wedderburn (1907), Mohrmann (1922), Tschetweruchin (1927), but also the nature of their contribution.
