In spite of its apparent simplicity, the compact complex parallelizable 3-dimensional manifold \(M\) known as the Iwasawa manifold has a very rich geometry and topology. (Let me recall that \(M= \Gamma \setminus G\), where \(G\) is the complex Heisenberg group and \(\Gamma\) is the discrete subgroup of matrices whose entries are Gaussian integers.) For example, it is known that \(M\) carries no Kähler metric even though it admits symplectic structures. The authors present in this paper an interesting and original contribution to the better understanding of the Hermitian geometry of this manifold \(M\). Fixed a standard metric \(g\) and an orientation \(v\) on \(M\), they determine and describe the set \({\mathcal C}\) of all invariant complex structures on \(M\) compatible with \(g\) and \(v\) (i.e., Hermitian structures on \(M)\), and the set \({\mathcal S}\) of all invariant symplectic structures on \(M\) compatible with \(g\) and \(v\) (i.e., almost Kähler structures on \(M)\). In fact, they show that \({\mathcal C}\) is a disjoint union of the standard complex structure of \(M\) and a 2-sphere, wheras \({\mathcal S}\) is a 3-sphere; even more, both sets \({\mathcal C}\) and \({\mathcal S}\) are described as non-intersecting subsets of \(\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^3\), the set of all invariant positively-oriented orthogonal almost complex structures on \(M\). Most of this study relies on the clever use and analysis of the 4-dimensional subspace \(D=\ker (d\mid {\mathfrak g}^*)\), \({\mathfrak g}\) being the Lie algebra of the complex Heisenberg group \(G\). Other classes of almost Hermitian structures in the classification of Gray-Hervella (quasi-Kähler, nearly-Kähler and semi-Kähler, in particular) are also considered and described.
