The authors study a model describing the thermal explosion and ignition of a mixture of carbon and air. They simulate the size distribution of the species by probability density functions. The chemistry is modelled as an Arhenius dynamics with a variable pre-exponential factor. The problem is given in nondimensional form and reduced to a large system of ordinary differential equations involving singular perturbations. The authors derive an explicit expression for the thermal explosion limit. They compare their numerical results to analytic computations and stress the importance of thermal radiation at high temperatures for explosion and ignition phenomena.
