This paper is concerned with spectral analysis of the sine-Gordon equation \(\varepsilon^2 u_{tt}-\varepsilon^2 u_{xx}+\sin u=0\) subject to initial data \(u(x,0)=f(x)\) and \(\varepsilon u_t(x,0)=g(x)\), where \(f,g\) are two continuous functions independent of \(\varepsilon\) such that \(\lim_{x\rightarrow \pm\infty}f(x)=0\) and \(\lim_{\rightarrow \pm \infty} g(x)=0\). Under some natural conditions on \(f\) and \(g\) it is shown that no point lying outside of the coordinate axes or any turning point curve can be an eigenvalue provided the dispersion parameter \(\varepsilon\) is sufficiently small.
