Let \(R\) be a commutative ring with nonzero identity. A comaximal factorization of a proper ideal \(I\) of \(R\) is a product \(I = I_1 \cdots I_n\) of proper ideals \(I_1, \ldots, I_n\) of \(R\) with \(I_i + I_j = R\) for \(i \neq j\). Early work on comaximal factorizations goes back to E. Noether. More recently, comaximal factorizations have been studied by \textit{S. McAdam} and \textit{R. G. Swan} [J. Algebra 276, No. 1, 180--192 (2004; Zbl 1081.13008)] for arbitrary commutative rings and by \textit{S. El Baghdadi, S. Gabelli} and \textit{M. Zafrullah} [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 212, No. 2, 376--393 (2008; Zbl 1131.13002)] in the context of star operations on integral domains. In this paper, the author generalizes the notion of comaximal factorizations using weak ideal systems on monoids. This approach generalizes and extends earlier results and provides several new results. He also gives a topological approach to comaximal factorizations using the Zariski topology.
