The authors treat properties of a phase space for an odd-dimensional state space, because they want to have a Weyl-Wigner calculus at their disposal. The other main topic of the paper is a Robertson-Schrödinger uncertainty principle for discrete coordinate and discrete momentum operators. Discrete coherent states and their discrete Wigner transforms are also investigated and applications to quantum optics are mentioned and their connection to Jacobi theta functions are pointed out. Finite dimensional phase spaces are also essential in wire-less communication, as demonstrated for example in these recent publications: [\textit{H. G. Feichtinger} et al., Q. J. Math. 59, No. 1, 15--28 (2008; Zbl 1142.22007); Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 26, No. 2, 230--248 (2009; Zbl 1162.43002)].
