The book is devoted to the study of traces on symmetric operator spaces (in the sense that it includes symmetrically normed operator ideals, symmetric function spaces and symmetric sequence spaces), and presents what may be considered to be the first complete systematic functional analysis approach to singular traces (i.e., traces on ideals of compact operators that vanish on the subideal of finite rank operators). The book is divided into an introduction, four main parts, and a small appendix on useful matrix results and operator inequalities. The first part contains two introductory chapters about the notion of a singular trace and some preliminaries on symmetric operator spaces (which also helps the reader to better understand what motivated the present theory on singular traces). The second part considers the general theory of symmetric functionals on symmetric operator spaces, by including some additional analysis on symmetric operator spaces, symmetric functionals, the Lidskii formula for continuous traces on symmetrically normed ideals of compact operators, and Dixmier traces. The third part is concerned with traces on Lorentz ideals by including the study of: (i) Lidskii formulas for Dixmier traces on Lorentz ideals, (ii) the interplay between Dixmier traces, \(\zeta\)-function residues and heat kernel formulas, and (iii) measurability in Lorentz ideals. The last part deals with applications to noncommutative geometry, where we may recognize a new and concise treatment of the noncommutative residue in Alain Connes' quantum calculus. Each chapter contains a final section with corresponding historical notes which help the reader to identify the gradual advances on the field.
