Recently, \textit{K. L. Duggal} and \textit{A. Bejancu} [`Lightlike submanifolds of semi-Riemannian manifolds and applications' (Math. Appl. 364, Kluwer, Dordrecht) (1996; Zbl 0848.53001)] developed the general theory of lightlike (null) submanifolds. They obtained the Gauss-Weingarten formulae, the structure equations for the four possible cases, namely: \(r\)-lightlike, coisotropic, isotropic, and totally lightlike submanifolds. In the paper under review, the author studies, within the framework of Chapter 5 of above book, the four possible cases with respect to totally umbilical lightlike submanifolds \(M\). The main results are: (1) A totally umbilical isotropic or totally lightlike \(M\) is totally geodesic. (2) On a totally umbilical \(M\) (of any of the four cases), an induced linear connection is a metric connection on its screen distribution. (3) On a totally umbilical coisotropic \(M\), the induced linear connection is metric iff \(M\) is totally geodesic. Finally, the author presents some properties of null sectional and Gaussian curvatures of totally umbilical lightlike surfaces in Lorentz manifolds.
