Let \(A \subseteq B\) be an inclusion of commutative \(\mathbb Q\)-algebras. An element \(b \in B\) is said to be subintegral over \(A\) if there exist elements \(c_1, \dots, c_p \in B\) such that for all \(n\) sufficiently large \(g_n = b^n+ \sum_{i=1}^p \binom ni c_ib^{n-1} \in A\). The authors' main result establishes that this condition, which seems to depend on infinitely many \(n\), actually is a finite condition. Precisely, they establish that if there is a positive integer \(N\) such that \(g_n \in A\) for \(N \leq n \leq 2N+2p-1\), then in fact \(g_n \in A\) for all \(n \geq N\). The theorem is proven by considering indeterminates \(x_1, \dots x_p, z\) over \(\mathbb Q\) and the polynomials \(\gamma_n = \sum_{i=1}^p \binom ni x_iz^{n-1}\). The authors show for sufficiently large integers \(n\) that \(\gamma_n\) is a linear combination of products of the form \(\gamma_i \gamma_j\) where \(i \geq [r/2]-p\), \(j \geq [r/2]-p\), and \(i+j=n\), from which it follows that the ring \(\mathbb Q[\{\gamma_n \mid n \geq N\}]\) is generated by \(\{\gamma_n \mid N \leq n \leq 2N+2p-1\}\). The main application of the theorem is to the case that every element of \(B\) is subintegral over \(A\), in which case \(A \subseteq B\) is called a subintegral extension. The theorem implies that a subintegral extension is a directed union of finitely generated subintegral extensions. The authors had previously defined a homomorphism from \(B/A\) to the group of invertible \(A\) submodules of \(B\), and proved it was an isomorphism under some finite type restrictions on \(A\). They show that the homomorphism being an isomorphism commutes with direct limits, so in view of their new result, they can remove the finite type restrictions from their previous result.
