Introduction (English)

The book ``Gabor analysis and algorithms'' edited by \textit{H. G. Feichtinger} and \textit{T. Strohmer} consists of 14 chapters written by scientists from various research areas. The topics address different problems and methods coming together in Gabor analysis. In their Introduction, the authors give a short overview of the basic concepts of Gabor analysis such as Fourier expansions and Gabor expansions, fundamental properties of Gabor frames, sampling features, the duality concept, numerical algorithms and various applications. All these topics were considered in detail in the following chapters. The introduction helps the reader to gain an insight into the history of Gabor analysis from \textit{D. Gabor}'s fundamental paper of 1946 [``Theory of communications.'' Trans. IEE 3, 429--456 (1946), \url{doi:10.1049/ji-3-2.1946.0074}] up to new developments in the last 10-15 years. See also the Foreword by I. Daubechies. The introduction closes with a ``Readers guide'' which contains short characterizations of the following chapters and with a collection of the ``Mathematical notation and basic tools'' used throughout the book. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0890.42004].
