The authors derive a modification of the alternating group explicit (AGE) method of \textit{D. J. Evans} [ibid. 17, 81-108 (1985; Zbl 0568.65050)] for the numerical solution of a tridiagonal linear system. It is shown that this modification (SMAGE method) is more efficient. Numerical results are presented.
