The book presents the theory of Krichever-Novikov algebras, Lax operator algebras, their interactions, elements of their representation theory, relations to moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces and holomorphic vector bundles on them, to Lax integrable systems and conformal field theory. Chapter 1 is an introduction to Krichever-Novikov algebras, Chapter 2 deals with fermion representations and the Sugawara construction, and Chapter 3 with the relation between vector field algebras on Riemann surfaces and moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces with marked points. Chapters 4 and 5 treat Lax operator algebras and their applications to integrable systems, providing an introduction to the theory of finite-dimensional integrable systems from quite a general point of view. Chapters 1--3 and 4--5 can be studied independently. Chapter 6 combines their subjects by assigning a conformal field theory to every Lax integrable system of a certain type. It closes with remarks on geometric quantization and Seiberg-Witten theory. The book is written in a pedagogical manner, but is also of interest to experts as it sums up recent results in the theory of almost graded infinite-dimensional Lie algebras that are presented for the first time in the form of a monograph.
