    The so-called \textit{\(\lambda\)-open topology} on the space \(C(X)\) of continuous real-valued functions defined on a Tychonoff space \(X\) was introduced by Arens and Dugundji as a generalization of the compact-open topology as well as of the topology of pointwise convergence on \(C(X)\). Given a collection \(\lambda\) of subsets of \(X\), a subbase for the \(\lambda\)-open topology is formed by the sets \(\{f\in C(X): f(F)\subseteq U\}\), where \(F\in\lambda\), and \(U\subseteq \mathbb R\) is open. The author gives examples showing that one gets distinct \(\lambda\)-open topologies when \(\lambda\) is, respectively, the class of all finite, metrizable compact, compact, sequentially compact, countably compact, pseudocompact, and \(C\)-compact subsets (a set \(A\subseteq X\) is \textit{\(C\)-compact}, provided \(f(A)\) is compact for each \(f\in C(X)\)). Then the \(C\)-compact-open topology on \(C(X)\) is studied in more detail, and characterizations of submetrizability, metrizability, 1st and 2nd countability, separability and of other related properties are given for this topology.
