We say that for a certain complex (simplicial, polyhedral, etc.), the \(f\)-vector is the vector \((f_0,f_1,\dots,)\) where \(f_i\) is the number of \(i\)-dimensional cells. This nice survey article presents a detailed overview of the theory of \(f\)-vectors (and their counterpart \(h\)-vectors) regarding the numerical relations satisfied by the \(f_i\), for example, upper and lower bounds, linear relations, characterization theorems for which integral vectors are actually \(f\)-vectors of a certain family of complexes, etc. The article starts with the case of simplicial complexes, then moves to the nonsimplicial complexes. The last part of the article contains a selection of interesting open problems. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0890.52001].
