A famous conjecture on the multiplicity of a Cohen-Macaulay graded algebra in terms of the graded Betti numbers of the minimal free resolution of that algebra was given by \textit{C. Huneke} and \textit{M. Miller} [Can. J. Math. 37, 1149--1162 (1985; Zbl 0572.13004)] and \textit{J. Herzog} and \textit{H. Srinivasan} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 350, No. 7, 2879--2902 (1998; Zbl 0899.13026)]. This conjecture was commonly known as the Multiplicity Conjecture. A partial extension to non-Cohen-Macaulay algebras was also given. Many authors proved important special cases and extensions of this conjecture, but it was considered to be a very difficult problem to establish the full conjecture, requiring a new approach. \textit{M. Boij} and \textit{Söderberg} [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 78, No. 1, 85--106 (2008; Zbl 1189.13008)] provided exactly that in a 2008 paper, offering a new conjecture that, once proven, classified the Betti diagrams of these algebras up to multiplication by rational numbers, and as a by-product proved the Multiplicity Conjecture. Eisenbud and Schreyer not only proved the Boij-Söderberg conjecture, but they also gave a classification of cohomology tables of coherent sheaves. In the present paper, Boij and Söderberg give an extension of this work to the non-Cohen-Macaulay case, and indeed to the general case of graded modules. Combined with work of \textit{D. Eisenbud}, \textit{G. Fløystad} and \textit{J. Weyman} [Ann. Inst. Fourier 61, No. 3, 905--926 (2011; Zbl 1239.13023)] and \textit{D. Eisenbud} and \textit{F.-O. Schreyer} [J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS) 12, No. 3, 703--722 (2010; Zbl 1213.14035)], this gives a complete classification of all possible Betti diagrams up to scalar multiples. As a consequence, they get the Multiplicity Conjecture for algebras and modules that are not necessarily Cohen-Macaulay, and indeed they produce a stronger statement in terms of the Hilbert series.
