In the paper under review, the authors introduce a new compactness notion for frames: a regular frame is said to be near-compact if it is complete with respect to some totally bounded nearness. The resulting concept of the Samuel near-compactification for nearness frames is then used to describe the completion of a nearness frame. For uniform frames this Samuel near-compactification coincides with the Samuel compactification for frames developed by these authors in [Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 108, No. 1, 63--78 (1990; Zbl 0733.54020)].
