\textit{R. Exel} [Ergodic Theory and Dyn. Ssyt. 23. No. 6, 1733--1750 (2003; Zbl 1059.46050)] proposed a new construction of the crossed product of a \(C^*\)-algebra by an endomorphism which encompasses a new ingredient, the transfer operator for the given endomorphism. The main results of the paper under review answer questions about existence and uniqueness of non-degenerate transfer operators associated to systems \((A,\alpha)\), where \(\alpha\) is an endomorphism of a unital \(C^*\)-algebra \(A\). Complete characterisations of transfer operators are given in the case that \(A\) is of the form \(C(X)\), for \(X\) a compact Hausdorff space, in particular, a metric space, and for systems of the form \((B(H), \alpha)\), where \(H\) is a separable Hilbert space and \(\alpha\) is a normal endomorphism. A couple of questions are formulated that relate the uniqueness of the non-degenerate transfer operators constructed here and the Kadison-Singer problem.
