This paper deals with the \(p\)-harmonic approximation lemma, which is extended to \(\varphi\)-harmonic functions, where \(\varphi\) is a convex function. This extension is done in three different directions. First, it is used a direct approach without a contradiction argument. Second, the authors are able to preserve the boundary values of the original function. Third, it is showed that \textbf{h} and \textbf{u} are close with respect to the gradients rather than just the functions. Here, \textbf{u} denotes the original solution in a ball and \textbf{h} is the solution in the same ball of the linearized elliptic system with constant coefficients. The proof is direct and it is mainly based on the Lipschitz truncation technique. The approximation lemma is applied to prove Hölder continuity for the gradient of a solution of a \(\varphi\)-harmonic system with critical growth.
