Let \(f: \mathbb R^n \to \mathbb R\) be a polynomial function. By Ekeland's variational principle one can find minimizing sequences of points \(v_k\), i.e., \(f(v_k) \to \inf_{\mathbb R^n} f\), such that \(\mathrm{grad} f(v_k) \to 0\). The author shows that they may be realised along the \textit{Milnor set} \(M(f)\) (for the terminology see [\textit{A. Némethi} and \textit{A. Zaharia}, Publ. Res. Inst. Math. Sci. 26, No. 4, 681--689 (1990; Zbl 0736.32024)]), which is generically a real curve (called here ``tangency curve''), and that they are moreover subject to a ``second order condition''.
