\textit{B. Teissier} [Invent. Math. 40, 267--292 (1977; Zbl 0446.32002)] introduced the notion of the Jacobian Newton polygon. The Jacobian Newton polygon of a plane analytic curve \(f(x,y) = 0\) is the Newton polygon of the discriminant of the map \((l, f): (\mathbb C^2, 0) \rightarrow (\mathbb C^2, 0)\) where \(l\) is a sufficiently general linear form. The equation of the discriminant can be obtained by eliminating variables from the system of equations. In many cases, for example if \(f\) is a Weierstrass polynomial, this can be done by using the usual discriminant of a polynomial in one variable. Having the equation of a discriminant, the Newton polygon is immediately given. In this paper, using the notion of Jacobian Newton diagrams defined with respect to any direction, the authors give a criterion of irreducibility for a complex power series in two variables. Moreover they study the singularity at infinity of a plane affine curve with one point at infinity for which the global counterpart of their main result holds.
