      The paper deals with a method to solve the eigenvalue problem for an elliptic partial differential equation. This problem is discretized by an adaptive finite element method. Contrary to a method which calls an eigensolver after each mesh refinement step the authors propose and justify an algorithm which calls an eigensolver once at the beginning of computation, and then carries out an iteration process on a sequence of locally refined meshes. The two iterative methods (called Picard's and Newton's variants) are presented. Numerical examples for the Laplace operator with the Dirichlet boundary conditions in 2D-domains which boundary consists of lines parallel to the coordinate axes are presented.
