This is a survey of recent results on bounds for the exceptional sets in some binary and ternary sums involving prime numbers. The work on binary sums largely derives from conjectures (H), (I) and (L) of \textit{G. H. Hardy} and \textit{J. E. Littlewood} [Acta Math. 44, 1--70 (1922; JFM 48.0143.04)], where a summand is a prime number or twice a prime number. The main point of the present paper is a discussion of the results by \textit{S.-F. Chiu} and \textit{M.-C. Liu} [Rocky Mt. J. Math. 26, No. 3, 959--986 (1996; Zbl 0888.11038)] which extend and include several results of the last few decades. In the ternary case, the authors review many results for sums like \(x_1^{k_1}+x_2^{k_2}+x_3^{k_3}\) where the \(k\)'s are integers \(\geq2\), both in the unrestricted case and when some of the \(x\)'s are prime numbers. Some of the latest results reviewed are optimal. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0937.00509].
