The author studies the asymptotic behaviour of the sum \[ S(x):= \sum_{m,n \leq x} d(m^2 + n^2), \] where \(d\) denotes the ordinary divisor function. He proves the estimate \[ S(x)= A_1 x^2 \log x + A_2 x^2 + O_{\varepsilon}(x^{3/2 + \varepsilon}),\quad x \to \infty, \] where \(A_1\) and \(A_2\) are certain constants and \(\varepsilon\) is any fixed positive real number. This result improves an asymptotic formula given by \textit{N. Gafurov} in [Proc. Steklov Inst. Math. 200, 137-148 (1993; Zbl 0790.11073)], and corrects a false computation for \(A_2\) claimed there.
