    The authors consider the following thermo-elastic system consisting of two strongly coupled wave equations for the the displacement \(w(x,t)\) and the temperature difference \(\tau (x,t)\) to a fixed reference temperature: \[ \rho w_{tt}(x,t)-aw_{xx}(x,t)+\beta \tau _{xt}(x,t)=0, x\in (0,1),\;t>0, \] \[ \tau _{tt}(x,t)+\beta w_{xt}(x,t)-k\tau _{xx}(x,t)=0, x\in (0,1),\;t>0, \] \[ aw_{x}(0,t)=\alpha w_{t}(0,t),\;w(1,t)=0, t>0, \] \[ \tau (0,t)=0,\;\tau _{x}(1,t)=0, t>0, \] \[ w(x,0)=\tilde w_0(x),\;w_{t}(x,0)=\tilde w_1(x), x\in (0,1), \] \[ \tau (x,0)=\tilde\tau _0(x),\;\tau _{t}(x,0)=\tilde\tau_1(x), x\in (0,1). \] Here \(\beta\) is a constant and \(\rho\), \(a\), \(c\), \(k\) and \(\alpha\) are positive parameters. The main goal of this paper is to apply spectral stability analysis in order to prove that this thermo-elastic system is at most asymptotically stable but it is not exponentially stable.
