Let \({\mathcal G}\) stand for the class of all compact metric spaces and let \(GH(.,.)\) be the Gromov-Hausdorff distance on it. In this paper, a modified Gromov-Hausdorff distance is introduced as \(\widehat{GH}(X,Y)= (1/2)\max\{\text{infdis}(X\to Y),\text{infdis}(Y\to X)\}\), \(X,Y\in {\mathcal G}\). Its basic properties are concentrated in Theorem 1. We have i) \(GH(X,Y)\geq \widehat{GH}(X,Y)\), \(\forall X,Y\in {\mathcal G}\), ii) \(\widehat{GH}(.,.)\) is a strict metric on the isometry classes of spaces in \({\mathcal G}\). Theorem 2. Let \({\mathcal F}\) be a \(GH\)-precompact family in \({\mathcal G}\). Then, for each \(\varepsilon > 0\) there exists \(\delta=\delta({\mathcal F},\varepsilon)> 0\) such that \(X,Y\in {\mathcal F}\) and \(\widehat{GH}(X,Y)< \delta\) imply \(GH(X,Y)< \varepsilon\). Finally, a structural theorem for this modified distance is given, by means of curvature sets.
