'Umar Hayām: treatise on the partition of a quadrant of a circle (Q453442)

The main part of this article consists of a German translation of the important Arabic treatise on the partitioning of a quadrant of a circle according to a given ratio by Umar al-Khayyām, which is a precursor of his later work on cubic equations. The German translation, which is especially intended for didactical purposes, was made from the French translation [in: R. Rashed (ed.) and A. Djebbar (ed.), L'oeuvre algébrique d'al-Khayyam. Établie, traduite et analysée. Sources and Studies in the History of Arabic Mathematics, 3. Aleppo, Syria: University of Aleppo, Institute for the History of Arabic Science (1981)] (for a review of the entire collection see [Zbl 0508.01005]) (reprinted [in: R. Rashed (ed.) and B. Vahabzadeh (ed.), Al-Khayyām the mathematician. Collection Sciences dans l'Histoire. Paris: Librairie Scientifique et Technique Albert Blanchard (1999)] (for a review of the entire collection see [Zbl 0941.01031])). It is preceded by a mathematical commentary and by an informative historical introduction based on a wide range of the available secondary literature.
