Let \((M; \varphi, \xi, \eta, g)\) be an almost contact metric \(3\)-manifold. A unit speed curve in \((M; \varphi, \xi, \eta, g)\) is said to be slant if its tangent vector field makes constant angle with \(\xi\). The notion of slant curves is a generalization of Legendre curves and plays important roles in almost contact metric manifolds. Now on the direct product manifold \(M \times {\mathbb R}\), define an almost complex structure \(J\) by \(J(X, \lambda \partial /\partial t) = (\varphi X - \lambda \xi, \eta(X) \partial /\partial t)\). If \(J\) is integrable, then \(M\) is said to be normal. In this paper, the authors study slant curves in normal almost contact metric \(3\)-manifolds with proper mean curvature vector field with respect to a canonical connection. They extend pseudo-Hermitian geometry of slant curves in contact metric \(3\)-manifolds to those in normal almost contact metric \(3\)-manifolds.
