Let \(k\) be a field, \(T=\{t_1, \dots, t_{d+1}\}\) a set of indeterminates and \(S=\{t_{i_1}, \dots, t_{i_n}\}\), \(1=i_1< i_2<\cdots< i_n=d+1\) a subset of \(T\). Let \(I\) be the kernel of the morphism of \(k\)-algebras \(k[T]\to k[x,y]\) sending \(t_i\) to \(x^{d-i+1} y^{i-1}\) and \(J=I\cap k[S]\). \(J\) is the toric ideal generated (over \(k)\) by the homogeneous binomials \(t_{i_1}^{u_1} \dots t_{i_n}^{u_n}-t^{v_1}_{i_1} \dots t_{i_n}^{v_n}\) with \(\sum u_ji_j =\sum v_j i_j\). The ring \(R=k[S]/J\) can be quite complicated. For example, \textit{J.-E. Roos} and \textit{B. Sturmfels} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I, Math. 326, No. 2, 141-146 (1998; Zbl 0934.14033)] produced such rings with \(J\) generated by quadratic forms but having irrational Poincaré-Betti series. Moreover, they give an example in which \(R\) is a Koszul algebra but \(J\) has no quadratic Gröbner basis. Working in the opposite direction, the author gives a criterion on \(S\) for \(J\) to have a quadratic Gröbner basis. This implies that \(R\) is a Koszul algebra, whence its Poincaré-Betti series is rational (and computed explicitly by the author). The main idea is to reduce the problem to the study of the Veronese ring \(V=k[T]/I\). More precisely, the author shows that if every ``connected component'' of \(T\setminus S\) consisting of \(m\) elements is surrounded by two ``connected components'' of \(S\) having at least \(m+2\) elements then \(I\) has a quadratic Gröbner basis \(B\) (with respect to a certain monomial order on \(k[T]\) depending on \(S)\) such that \(b-\text{in} (b)\in k[S]\) for every \(b\) in \(B\). It follows that \(B\cap k[S]\) is a Gröbner basis for \(J\) with respect to the induced monomial order. Moreover, if \(S\subseteq S'\subseteq T\) then \(B\cap k[S']\) is a Gröbner basis for \(J'=I \cap k[S']\).
