The paper is concerned with approximation of functions in the \(L^2\)-metric on an arbitrary rank 1 Riemannian symmetric space \(X\) of noncompact type [see, e.g., \textit{S. Helgason}, Geometric analysis on symmetric spaces (1997; Zbl 0809.53057)]. The main tools used are the Fourier transform on symmetric spaces and the spherical Fourier transform, studied in \S 1, and the averaging operator \[ S_tf(x) = |\sigma (t)|^{-1} \int_{\sigma(x,t)} f(y) d\sigma_x(y),\quad t>0, \] studied in \S 2. Here \( \sigma (x,t) \) is the sphere in \(X\) of center \(x\) and radius \(t>0\), \(d\sigma_x(y)\) is the volume element, and \(|\sigma (t)|\) is the volume of the sphere \(\sigma (x,t).\) As an auxiliary result the author proves in \S 3 some new estimates for the spherical functions on symmetric spaces of rank 1. The approximation results obtained by the author concern analogs of Jackson theorems on upper bounds for best approximations of functions in terms of the moduli of continuity and smoothness, and Bernstein type inequalities for functions with bounded spectrum, which are used to obtain complete descriptions of function spaces of Nikolski and Nikolski-Besov type in terms of best approximations by functions with bounded spectrum.
