The paper describes in great detail the proof of the result announced in [C. R., Math., Acad. Sci. Paris 348, No. 11--12, 597--600 (2010; Zbl 1203.11043)]: If \(G\) is one of the classical groups \(\mathrm{GL}_n, \mathrm{SO}_n\) or \(\mathrm{Sp}_n\) over \(\mathbb Q\) and \(P\neq G\) a (standard) parabolic subgroup with Levi decomposition \(P = L_PN_P,\) the residue or principal value of the derivative of an Eisenstein series attached to \(P\) at some point \(s\) can only contribute to the Eisenstein cohomology of \(G\) if the coordinates of \(s\) with respect to a certain basis of the natural vector space \(s\) belongs to are either half integers or (in case \(G = \mathrm{GL}_n\)) their differences are half integers.NEWLINENEWLINEThe authors stress that this also holds for non-split forms of the groups \(G\) under consideration. They also point out the corollary, that poles of symmetric and exterior square \(L\)-functions inside the critical strip \(0<\mathrm{Re}(s)<1\) do not play a role in computing the Eisenstein cohomology coming from residues of Eisenstein series attached to a globally generic cuspidal automorphic representation of \(L_P\).NEWLINENEWLINETo a large extent the proof consists in finding a good way to describe the action of coset representatives of minimal length in \(W_{L_P}\backslash W,\) where \(W\) is the Weyl group of \(G\) and \(W_{L_P}\) that of \(L_P\), on the vector space to which \(s\) belongs.
