Let \(\mathbf{D}\) be the open unit disc in the complex plane and let \(|\cdot|_\mathbf{D}\) denote the uniform norm on the bounded functions on \(\mathbf{D}\). By definition, a polynomial \(P\) of degree at most \(n\) is called a bound-preserving operator on \(\mathcal{P}_n\), the set of polynomials of degree \(\leq n\), if \(|P\ast p|_\mathbf{D} \leq |p|_\mathbf{D}\) for all \(p\in \mathcal{P}_n\), where \(\ast\) denotes the Hadamard product on \(\mathcal{P}_n\). Finally, let \(\mathcal{B}_n^0\) denote the set of bound-preserving \(Q \in \mathcal{P}_n\) with \(Q(0) = 1\) and so that \(\det T_n > 0\) (or, equivalently, \(\det T_k>0\) for \(1 \leq k \leq n\)), where the \(T_k\) are Toeplitz matrices with first row \((1, A_1,\ldots,A_k)\) if \(Q(z) = 1 + \sum_{k=1}^n A_k z^k\). In the main theorem the author shows that for any \(Q \in \mathcal{B}_n^0\), \(n \geq 2\), there is an optimal constant \(0 < d(Q,n) < 1\) such that \[ |Q \ast p|_\mathbf{D} + d(Q,n) |p - Q \ast p|_\mathbf{D} \leq |p|_\mathbf{D} \qquad (p \in \mathcal{P}_n). \] The author also discusses cases of equality and he formulates alternative versions of the main theorem.
