The well-known variational problems for harmonic maps and Yang-Mills fields have generalizations where the integrands \({1\over2}|Du|^2\) or \({1\over2}|\omega_A|^2\) are replaced by \(F({1\over2}|Du|^2)\) or \(F({1\over2}|\omega_A|^2)\), where \(F\) is a \(C^2\)-function with \(F'>0\). The critical points are called \(F\)-harmonic maps or \(F\)-harmonic Yang-Mills fields. Non-existence results for nonconstant \(F\)-harmonic maps and nonflat \(F\)-Yang-Mills-fields have been proven in [\textit{Y. Dong} and \textit{S. W. Wei}, Commun. Math. Phys. 304, No. 2, 329--368 (2011; Zbl 1225.58009)] under assumptions that combine properties of \(F\) with curvature conditions for the domain manifold. The results are improved here to weaker assumptions, using suitable monotonicity formulae.
