In this paper, a ``gravitazation of quantum mechanics'' is proposed, in contrast ``quantization of gravity'' which is usually sought. The main idea is that Einstein's principle of equivalence should lead to unstable superpositions of spacetimes with a certain finite lifetime which is inversely proportional to the difference of the energies of those states. Therefore, the unitary evolution of states and the reduction of the state during a measurement could be seen as different manifestations of a more general underlying nonlinear theory. This paper is complemented by the author's paper ``On the gravitization of quantum mechanics. II: Conformal cyclic cosmology'', Found. Phys. 44, No. 8, 873--890 (2014; Zbl 1302.83041).
