The paper presents an asymptotic preserving scheme for the numerical solution of singularly perturbed partial differential equations as often observed in gas dynamics. The method of flux splitting is used to transform the non-stationary differential equation into an elliptic equation with the time and singularity parameter dependent diffusion coefficient. The transformed equation is solved by the continuous finite difference method. As illustrated by examples, the author shows that the scheme overperforms the implicit Euler and the mixed implicit/explicit schemes in terms of consistency as well as convergence. Several lemmas and theorems are stated and proved.
