The construction of the quantized universal enveloping algebra \(U_q(C)\) for a symmetrizable Cartan matrix \(C\) is well-known. A study of crystals for \(C\) non-symmetrizable was done in a combinatorial manner by \textit{A. Joseph} and \textit{P. Lamprou} [Adv. Math. 221, No. 6, 2019--2058 (2009; Zbl 1194.17006)] without using any quantized universal enveloping algebra. The paper under review defines \(U_q(C)\) for \(C\) not necessarily symmetrizable. Precursors of such a definition occurred in the work of \textit{M. Rosso} via quantum shuffles [Invent. Math. 133, No. 2, 399--416 (1998; Zbl 0912.17005)] and of \textit{N. Andruskiewitsch} and \textit{H.-J. Schneider} [Math. Sci. Res. Inst. Publ. 43, 1--68 (2002; Zbl 1011.16025)] via Nichols algebras. These quantizations applied to a non-symmetrizable \(C\) yield half of a quantum group, and a Drinfeld double construction combines the positive and negative parts to yield a \(U_q(C)\). The base field in the paper under review is assumed to be of characteristic zero, but also to contain \(q^{1/2}\). Use is made of the averaged matrix \(C'\) whose \(ij\)-th entry is \(1/2(c_{ij} + c_{ji})\). The author considers the specialization map sending \(q\) to 1. Imitating the procedure in the symmetrizable case is shown by an example to be not always well-defined. However a specialization is given whose surjective image is \(U(C')\), and an analogous, but partial, result is given for Nichols algebras, involving negative parts. The author appears to say that he will give a bar resolution in the non-symmetrizable case, but the relevant section 6.3 seems to only treat the symmetric case.
