For the purposes of this review only, say that a group \(G\) has \(\mathcal P\) if it has a normal series of finite length whose factors are all locally cyclic and say that \(G\) has \(\mathcal H\) if \(G\) has an ascending normal series whose factors are locally cyclic. These properties for groups clearly extend the notions of supersoluble and hypercyclic. The object of this paper is to extend to groups with \(\mathcal P\) or \(\mathcal H\) well-known properties of supersoluble and hypercyclic groups. We state a sample. Let \(G\) be a group and \(H\) and \(K\) normal subgroups of \(G\) with \(\mathcal P\) (resp. with \(\mathcal H\)). If \([H,K]\) is nilpotent (resp. hypercentral), then \(HK\) has \(\mathcal P\) (resp. \(\mathcal H\)). Let \(G\) be a group with a nilpotent normal subgroup \(N\) such that \(G/N\) has \(\mathcal H\). Then \(G\) has \(\mathcal H\). With an obvious notion of a normal subgroup of a group \(G\) being \(\mathcal P\)-embedded in \(G\), then a group \(G\) has a finite normal subgroup \(N\) such that \(G/N\) has \(\mathcal P\) if and only if \(G\) has a \(\mathcal P\)-embedded normal subgroup of finite index (compare Schur's theorem on centre-by-finite groups).
