Let \(X\) be a CW-complex and \(\pi=\pi_1(X)\to G\) be a surjection onto an abelian group. Let \(k\) be an algebraically closed field. The group ring \(k[G]\) is filtred by the augumentation ideal \(I\). There is a spectral sequence \(E^1_{-p,p+q}=gr^p_I(k[G])\otimes H_q(X,k)\) converging to the \(I\)-adic completion of \(H^*(X;k[G])\) constructed by the authors [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 362, No. 5, 2685--2721 (2010; Zbl 1195.55005)]. The first table is treated as a complex of \(S\)-algebras with \(S=gr^*_I(k[G])\). The homology jump loci of \(E^1\) are subvarieties of \(spec(S)\simeq H^1(\bar G;k)\) with \(\bar G=G/tors(G)\) being the free part of \(G\). The main theorem relates the resonance varieties \(R_i^*(X;k)\subset H^1(X;k)\) with the homology jump loci of \(E^1\). A corollary is deduced: Denote by \(X^{ab}\to X\) the cover corresponding to the abelianization of \(\pi\). Assume \(X\) has a finite \(n\)-skeleton. Suppose all the resonance varieties \(R_i^*(X;k)\) with \(i\leq n\) are empty or vanish, then the completion of \(H_i(X^{ab};k)\) are finite dimensional \(k\)-vector spaces for all \(i\leq k\).
