The authors consider the following problem \[ \begin{aligned} -\sum_{1\leq i,j\leq n}D_i((p_i(x)p_j(x))^{1/2}a_{ij}(x)D_ju(x)+\bigl(b(x)-\lambda\bigr)u(x)\rho(x)\\ =-\rho(x)f(x,u(x))\text{ for }x\in \Omega\end{aligned}\leqno{(*)} \] such that \(\Omega\) is an open set in \(\mathbb R^n\), \(a_{ij},b,p,\rho\) are continuous functions satisfying some conditions and \(\lambda\) is a real number. By defining \(\mathcal{H}(\Omega)\), a subspace of the weighted Hilbert space \(L_2(\Omega,\rho)\), as expected w.r.t. the measure \(\rho(x)dx\) (\(dx\) is the Lebesgue measure), the authors observe that weak solutions of \((*)\) correspond to the critical points of the functional \(I_\lambda(u):=\frac{1}{2}L(u,u)-\frac{\lambda}{2}\int_\Omega (u(x))^2\rho(x)dx+\int_\Omega F(x,u(x))\rho(x)dx\) for \(u\in \mathcal{H}(\Omega)\), such that \(L\) is a two-form on \(\mathcal{H}(\Omega)\) and \(F\) a real-valued continuous differential function on the closure of \(\Omega\) times \(\mathbb R\). Then by assuming that \(\Omega\) satisfies additional conditions (Definitions 1.1 and 1.2) and by assuming (respectively) several conditions on \(F\), the authors show that \((*)\) has nontrivial solutions in \(\mathcal{H}(\Omega)\) (Theorems 1.1--1.6).
